With warm weather finally gracing our cities, we need some new looks to pull us out of that winter depression. Here are the top runway looks to inspire and innovate your summer wardrobe in the best way possible.
1. Puffy Sleeves
These atrocities are making a comeback. Yup, those hideous things from “Dynasty” are finally returning in a stylish rendition, inspired by 1980s looks but made much better. Saint Laurent went with jewel-coloured puffballs, and we’ll be seeing this around stores soon. Many designers cite Princess Di as their puffy inspiration.
2. Crayola Colors
Crayola colors are here this season, and it’s not nearly as bad as it sounds. Runways were filled with vibrant colors like tomato red and emerald green, pulsing through outfits and giving them life. The reason for so much color? To get us out of this year’s political depression, of course.
The ultimate Queen Mum of colors or the middle school shade of eyeshadow, is returning in a youthful and gorgeous interpretation of pastel style that will compliment nearly every skin tone. Thanks to stunning, contemporary silhouettes, we can’t wait to try this new look out.
4. Check print
This is generally in cream and black, worn with tights for a surefire winter look. But it has been revamped for summer with a color update. Alexander McQueen had gorgeous red and blue plaids grace the runway. It’s a bold wake-up from boring ol’ florals, and we adore it.
5. Wet look
This trend might not be comfortable or sweat-friendly, but at least you can wipe off your hot dog and funnel cake stains with ease. Materials like plastic and rubber were popular this season – everything from black vinyl pants and jumpsuits to plastic-coated nylon made for a sporty look we can’t resist.
Sportswear and racetrack inspired looks. Athleisure has been around for a while, but these super sporty looks tackle Nascar style, scuba diving, skiing, and motor-cross suits. It’s not for the faint-hearted, who should probably stick with their Lululemons. Motorsport, put that thing in sport!
7. Double Denim
Double Denim has made a return, ladies and gentlemen. The Canadian tuxedo is back. We saw it at A.P.C this year, but instead of a classic boyfriend jean with cropped jacket as we’ve seen so many times before, try it with a longer jacket such as a floor-duster or billowing gown style evening jacket.
8. Fanny Packs
Fanny packs, otherwise known as bum bags, are the style statement you made fun of your mom and grandma for, but turns out they were the trend-setters this whole time. Fenty Puma, Balenciaga, and Gucci styled their around the waistband slung low.
9. Clashing Prints
While you were told this was a fashion no your whole life, Gucci, Marni, Dries Van Noten and Maison Margiela were behind the scenes, creating the ultimate theme for spring/summer 2018. It takes creativity but that’s about it. We love this insane trend that mixes different prints, patterns, and textures within one outfit.
Sheer and transparent looks made a comeback, in everything from nylon and silk, to plastic and tulle. We saw this on the runways from Prabal Gurung and Anna Sui. Of course, the level of skin-baring can be adjusted via layering and materials chosen.
